Sleep and snoring: How to stop snoring using these 10 tips
Snoring is an absolutely normal phenomenon! It is the sound made by the vibration of tissues in the throat that are relaxed during sleep. However, when snoring is excessive, it can be very annoying for your partner or even, in extreme cases, your neighbors. It is therefore important to address the problem so that everyone can enjoy a better sleep! Here are some ideas and tips to help you solve the problem and finally stop snoring … or at least reduce it!
1- Watch your sleeping position
Did you know that some positions promote airway obstruction? Avoid sleeping on your back and opt for sleeping on your side instead. Since your airways will be more open when laying on your side, your snoring will be reduced or even stopped.
2- Avoid drinking alcohol before going to bed
It is well known that snoring is unfortunately made worse by alcohol consumption. Alcohol causes the muscle in the airway to relax. It is best to avoid consuming it before going to bed for a peaceful night!
3- Exercise
Obesity is a factor that increases your chances of snoring excessively. Fortunately, physical activity also generally helps promote a better quality of sleep. It is therefore good practice to incorporate exercise into your daily life to reduce the chances of snoring.
4- Clean up from top to bottom
Allergens (such as dust mites) can cause congestion, which in turn can cause snoring. Why not make time to clean up your room from top to bottom to help minimize congestion?
5- Use a humidifier
If you suffer from nasal congestion, you’ll probably spend the night snoring. When necessary, use a humidifier to adjust the humidity of your bedroom. Furthermore, why not add eucalyptus oil? It’s a plant known for its beneficial effect on airways.
6- Stop smoking
If you are a smoker, you might want to consider quitting … to stop snoring! If you are not able to quit, at least try to decrease your tobacco consumption in the evening.
7- Avoid sleeping pills
Sleeping pills may help you fall asleep, but they also cause the relaxation of airway muscles. That’s a good enough reason to try to find other ways to sleep better, when possible.
8- Consult a specialist in sleep disorders
If our tips do not work, you may need to consult a sleep specialist. Indeed, some conditions require wearing a breathing apparatus during the night. Do not hesitate to consult your doctor if you feel the need. You may also suffer from some form of sleep apnea.
9- Opt for surgery
In some rare cases, snoring is caused by a malformation! It might therefore be necessary to resort to surgery to solve your problems. Consult a specialist to make sure you don’t need such an intervention.
10- Change your mattress
Finally, why not opt for a firmer mattress? An old, weakened mattress could affect your sleeping position and cause snoring.
