What type of mattress should you choose for your adjustable bed?

Beds are becoming more refined and technologically advanced. The arrival of the adjustable bed frame is proof of this. In this instance, we’re referring to electric beds with an articulated or motorized frame. Regardless of what you call them, these beds enable you to adjust your sleeping or lounging position with the simple click of a remote control. You can buy a complete electric bed (frame and mattress) or just an adjustable frame. In the latter case, certain criteria will apply, particularly with regard to the type of mattress that will work perfectly with this type of frame.

The perfect fit: an adjustable frame with a flexible mattress

From an ergonomic point of view, an adjustable bed frame represents a big step forward. When accompanied by a suitable mattress, it will help you find the ideal position.

Do you like to use your laptop or read in bed? Are you looking for pain relief? Do you need to minimize your snoring or mitigate your sleep apnea? Do you want to be able to watch TV in comfort? A good adjustable frame is just what you need. It will allow you to incline or raise your upper and lower body independently, one millimeter at a time. Certain models even include vibration, lighting and lumbar support systems.

However, an articulated bed cannot realize its full potential unless you combine it with an appropriate mattress. In that regard, the mattress must be flexible enough to retain its properties as the frame flexes and bends it.

Viscoelastic foam (“memory foam”) mattresses are an excellent choice for adjustable bed frames, thanks to their inherent elasticity. The same goes for latex foam mattresses. These are especially popular with those who suffer from joint or back pain and those who tend to feel uncomfortably hot during the night. In the latter case, a mattress made with several layers of foam and a layer of gel is the best option. Technogel®, a material originating from the field of medicine, traps body heat, thanks to its thermal conductivity, thus producing a sensation of coolness.

What about spring mattresses?

When designed to do so, a spring mattress can adapt perfectly to an adjustable frame. If you already have a spring mattress (or hybrid mattress) for a fixed frame, as long as it’s the pocket spring type, it will complement an adjustable frame quite nicely. On the other hand, if the springs are interconnected (Bonnel-type), the mattress will offer less flexibility. This will not only reduce the level of comfort but will also place an undue burden on the motor. If you have questions or concerns, consult a specialist.
